Robert Wynne was born in 1558/59 in Shrewsbury, Co. Shropshire, England. He married Francis Wattmer ca 1590 in England. Frances was born in 1565 in Stottesdon, Co. Shropshire, England, the daughter of William Watmoughe/Wattmore and Margaret Sparkes/Parkes. Robert was a Woolen draper. He was a apprentice to John Rose and released from his indenture in 1590. Six years later Robert was the Mayor of Canterbury, England, and held that office from 1596-1599. He and Frances died of the Plague within 2 days of each other. Their children were disbursed into other families. Robert died on 06 Sept/Oct 1609 and Frances died on 08 Sept 1609, both in Canterbury, Co. Kent, England. After building Fort Henry in 1646, he and three other Virginians, two servants and a guide explored what someday would become Tennessee and Kentucky, and being the first Englishmen to set foot there. After this, Joshua lived in Prince George County, Virginia. On 29 March 1715 Major Joshua Wynne was shot and killed by Saponey Indians because one of Joshua's servants had killed one of the Indian's "great" men. Upon trial of the Indian, they pleaded that the Wynne's were the aggressors and that they never rest without revenge. The Indians said that they and the Wynne's were then equal, each having lost a great man. To avoid more bloodshed the Indian was pardoned. Joshua was an Indian interpreter and was said to be a fearless adventurer. He was a Justice in Charles City County, Virginia as well as Sheriff of Prince George County, Virginia. After the death of his wife Mary, Joshua married Frances (Anderson) Herbert Cocke, widow of Thomas Cocke. Her father was John Anderson. Joshua was killed by Indians in revenge after his servant killed one of their "Great Men". Joshua died in Nov of 1715 in Dinwiddie Co., Virginia. 3.i.
